In 1990, a concerned citizen by the name of Terence D. Edwards wrote a letter to the New York Times encouraging the public to reject 2 Live Crew.
“The imagery of 2 Live Crew’s lyrics and stage performance is of sexual degradation and sneering self-satisfaction,” he wrote, “repeatedly and venomously characterizing women by four-letter words referring to female genitalia.”
Edwards had no idea that 12 years after accusing the Miami rap crew of objectifying women, former 2 Live Crew frontman and Miami New Times columnist Luther Campbell would be championing women’s rights ahead of the 2012 presidential election.

In a recent interview with MTV News, Uncle Luke stressed the important role that women play in this year’s general election, calling the 2012 race a contest “about women’s rights” before encouraging everyone to vote.
“If people don’t go out and vote then you’ll get a guy in office that’ll probably overturn Roe v. Wade,” he said. “You’ll probably get the health care reforms overturned.”
Mitt Romney, of course, has flip-flopped on abortion. He sided with pro-choice supporters as governor of Massachusetts. However, he has all but picketed outside of a Planned Parenthood during his latest presidential campaign.
“I support the reversal of Roe v. Wade, because it is bad law and bad medicine,” Romney wrote in a 2011 piece entitled “My Pro-Life Pledge” published by National Review. “Roe was a misguided ruling that was a result of a small group of activist federal judges legislating from the bench.”
Campbell says that if people don’t vote, “we’ll get set back another 10 years.”
But if Roe v. Wade does get reversed, it’ll be more like 39 years.
