Don’t be confused by the title of The Jew and the Gentile, vocal assemble Serraphic fire’s newest concert. Even though it sounds like two-thirds of an antiquated joke, this performance contains some serious classical music.
A combination of “the father of Jewish composition,” Salamone Rossi and his Catholic contemporary Claudio Monteverdi, the program presents some of the best early Baroque music you’ll find anywhere.
“The power of music transcends differences like few other things and this program is a prime example of that power,” says Patrick Dupré Quigley, Artistic Director Seraphic Fire and The Firebird Chamber Orchestra. “I hope that our audiences will experience the unifying force of this music.”
As a member of Monteverdi’s orchestra, Rossi defied the antisemitism around him, and the two worked together in a classic example of art overcoming social and political differences.
