This evening at the Biscayne Triangle Truck Round-up look for a different kind of vehicle. Seriously Organic, a foraging company that launched last summer with the mission of connecting farmers to chefs and consumers, will bring its refrigerated truck to the gathering. It will be packed with fresh Florida organic produce, meats and cheese — yes, Florida cheese.
Juan Rochaix, a 20-year veteran of the restaurant industry, founded the company with Elke Zabinski after growing tired of not being able to buy Florida produce. He works closely with local restaurants such as Gigi, Sra. Martinez, Michy’s and Red Light, bringing them high-quality products from small farmers around the state. But he also visits local markets, making it possible for people like you and me to buy his finds.
Tonight will be Rochaix’s first time at BTTR. He will have organic produce including baby lettuces, tomatoes and petit heirlooms, and calendula lip balm hand-made locally by farmer Muriel Olivares of Little River Market Garden.
He will also have Florida, grass-fed beef and lamb from
Florida Fresh Meat, a company in Ocala that works with small ranchers in
the area. Free-range, antibiotic-free eggs
from Lake Meadow Naturals, also in Ocala, and some duck eggs, will also
be available.
But the most exciting, perhaps, is Rochaix’s latest find: Florida
cheese from Winter Park Dairy. Rochaix says chefs have loved the
company’s cheeses, which include “Bleu Sunshine,” a blue cheese that he
compares to Stilton, black and bleu and chia (a blue cheese infused with
chia seed). They also make Florida tomme, a cheese similar to Parmesan,
which you won’t see tonight because it sold out.
BTTR runs from 5:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. on NE 127th Street and Biscayne
Boulevard. Rochaix said how long he’s there tonight and whether he’ll return depends on how business
goes.”Let’s see if enough people dance with us,” he said.
Seriously Organic also visits the Pinecrest Farmers Market on Sundays
and LaunchArte on Saturdays. You can also find them one evening every
two weeks at Bikram Hot Yoga in Coconut Grove. Follow their Twitter feed
and Facebook page for exact times and locations.
