You might not have heard of Rabbi Shlomo Carlebach. But you’ve certainly felt his influence, especially if you’re Jewish. Carlebach is the innovative father of popular Jewish music, and through his collaboration with musical legends such as Nina Simone and Bob Dylan, he rocked the music world as well as American Judaism with his groundbreaking influence. Soul Doctor, which runs through January 8 at the Colony Theatre, tells the tale of Rabbi Shlomo’s harrowing escape from Nazi Germany, his sway with the Chabad movement, his personal goal to reinvent the Jewish experience though his ’60s-style folk music, and his infectious quest to spread love and peace. Told through music, it’s a true-life odyssey of one man’s personal struggle with his people’s traditions while he tries to bring joy to a broken world.

Saturdays, 8 p.m.; Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, 7 p.m.; Wednesdays, Sundays, 2 & 7 p.m. Starts: Dec. 24. Continues through Jan. 8, 2011
