What other festival provides it all — rock, rap, reggae, pop, punk, and nearly everything in between? SunFest 2005, where an ambitious attempt to bridge the demographic divide creates something for everyone. There’s Nelly and Brian McKnight for urban music aficionados, Ryan Cabrera and Elvis’s baby girl Lisa Marie Presley for pop purists, and Wyclef Jean and Steel Pulse for island enthusiasts. Jonny Lang belts out the blues and 3 Doors Down assuages the rabid rockers. Disco devotees can party with KC & the Sunshine Band as they recycle their greatest jingles, er, hits, while aging New Wavers can gawk at Billy Idol, whose current attempt at a comeback has him resurrecting his trademark sneer and, regrettably, pouring himself into those trademark leather trousers. Still, the most intriguing oldies offering finds the return of the Steve Miller Band, apparently in hibernation since Reagan first occupied the White House. Indeed, time does keep on slipping, slipping, slipping into the future.
