Bear and Bird Gallery, on the second floor of Tate’s Comics in Lauderhill, has long explored the connection between fine art and toys. Past events have included a Munny doll extravaganza, silk purses made from cigar boxes, and Star Wars characters as Beanie Baby-style art. In its latest exhibit, “Peculiar Playmates: Curious Sculptural Artworks,” gallery owner and curator Amanda Magnetta-Ottatti gave the artists minimal direction. As a result, she’s not sure what they’ll deliver: “Each artist is so different from the others. None do the same thing, so it will be interesting to see them displayed together.”
Artists from South Florida to Berlin will showcase their handmade oddities, including stitched, stuffed softies and ceramic figurines that are both anthropomorphic and monstrous. Look out for Megan Bogonovich’s ceramic two-headed sheep, Kit Lane’s felted beings, Ninon’s expressive fabric gremlins, and Rosanna Pereyra’s severed doll parts.
