Michael Symon won the Amstel Light People’s Choice Award at the Amstel Light Burger Bash last night for his “The Fat Doug Burger” — a beef patty topped with pastrami, Havarti cheese, cole slaw and mustard.

It was the high point of an evening filled with flesh, as thousands jammed an ocean-side tent to dance, drink, and eat more burgers than anyone dreamed possible — 31 different varieties, to be exact. The Filling Station even put Nutella on its meat.

As a band played mostly oldie hits, mixed with a few contemporaries, fans munched on toston burgers, meat slapped between between two tostones from Pincho Factory; ramen burgers, meat in a bun made of ramen, from Brooklyn’s Ramen Burger; and something called Anaya-lata, “tempura beef cheek madras curry tomato jam, melted Fontina cheese and dijonnaise,” by Miami’s OTC. A damn multi-ethnic event.

Andrew Zimmern spent most of the night greeting people in a VIP zone, while Top Chef all-star Richard Blais appeared to be having a pretty good time, too. Most of the Burger Bash-goers didn’t seem to notice them though. They were too busy with the Blackened Sabbath, an entry from Billings, Montana, that included goat cheese, arugula, and sriracha.

Beer — including an Amstel Light version with lime — was copious. So was damn good wine. Our favorite burger of the evening, believe it or not, was the good ole frita from El Rey de las Fritas, What can we say, we are patriotas!
