Thanks to Shank, premiering in North America this Saturday at the Miami Gay and Lesbian Film Festival, the days of the coming-of-age gay-boy film might be over. That’s because 21-year-old British director Simon Pearce (not to be confused with the glass blowers) has taken the bildungs-ho-man, held it up against the wall, and punched its face in. Pearce, who learned his craft working as an assistant on the Bond film Casino Royale, shot his debut on video, an appropriately gritty style for a film about a violent gang member who falls in love with one of his own. The screening will take place at the equally gritty FIU Biscayne Bay Campus Mary Ann Wolfe Theater at 8 p.m., but it’s only one of six screenings throughout the day. Also of note is the 3 p.m. experimental shorts program happening at the Miami Beach Cinematheque.
