Anyone even vaguely familiar with South America knows Colombia’s reputation precedes itself. From picturesque landscapes and striking women to drug cartels and guerrilla warfare, the land is as saturated with beauty as it is with corruption. But thanks to the Colombian Film Festival, it will become memorable for another reason: excellent independent movies. Tonight the two-weekend-long festival closes with the Miami premiere of El Colombian Dream, a film that offers more than a clichéd look at a country known for its vices.

Narrated by the spirit of an aborted child, the movie dives headfirst into a surreal journey marked by incest, drugs, and action. Colorful and psychedelic, El Colombian Dream offers plenty of visual pleasures via graphic effects while the plot fuses humor with drama. Although the film was shot in Spanish, tonight’s screening will have English subtitles. Head to the Miami Beach Cinematheque at 8:30

Sun., July 22, 8:30 p.m.
