Despite what his followers would have you think, Jesus Christ wasn’t a meek, peace-loving hippie. He was a bad ass who hung out with social outcasts and acted out in temple. Such is the case with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., whose image has been homogenized almost to the point of saintliness. But he was actually a bit of a bad boy himself. Even though it was proven King had extramarital affairs and plagiarized on occasion (including in his doctoral dissertation at Boston University), King demands some serious respect for turning the tide of racial injustice in the United States. The man is a legend. And what better way to honor a legend than with a parade? Come out and enjoy the marching band stylings of Florida International University and several area middle and high schools as they march through NW 54th Street on Monday for the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day Parade. The procession begins on 12th Avenue at 11 a.m. and continues through 32nd Avenue. This year’s theme is “One Dream, One Community,” and the event is free.
