It has been a disappointing season for the Florida Marlins, a team that started out blazing hot, then had a historically awful month, then picked it up once more, only to peter out and limp, almost literally, to the finish line. But the 2011 season has been an even bigger letdown for the Cincinnati Reds, who are the defending champions of their division and still arguably the most talented team. But the Reds have not lived up to expectations, and they find themselves languishing in third place, far from the playoff picture.
For the Marlins, the rest of the season is about finishing on a positive note, from both a collective and an individual perspective. The team can still win more games than it loses (a fine achievement), and for its core of young players, any time on the field is valuable. Or if you’re feeling cynical, the remainder of the season is prime time for all involved to pad their stats. Commiseration will happen Tuesday at Sun Life Stadium.
