Former University of Miami football coach Randy Shannon has filed a lawsuit against UM in Miami-Dade court, alleging that the school is stiffing him on money he’s owed. After firing the coach in November 2010, the school has tried to pro-rate the cash its still obligated to pay Shannon — a maneuver that goes against the original contract, he argues.
“There is nothing in the (contract) that allows UM to prorate” the payouts, Shannon’s attorneys argue in the new lawsuit.
Shannon, who played at UM from 1985 – 1988, helmed the program as head coach starting in 2007. In 2010, he endured a tough season after starting the year ranked 13th in the nation. Following a particularly brutal loss at home to South Florida, the school fired him.
ESPN reported at the time that the school would buy out the remaining four years on Shannon’s contract for around $1.5 million.
His new suit doesn’t specify how much the school owes him, but says that UM is arguing that since Shannon was 10 months into a calendar year on his contract, he’s only entitled to “5/6th of the full amount.”
Shannon’s attorney, Jack Scarola, is demanding compensation, attorney’s fees and interest from the school.
A UM spokeswoman reached by Riptide declined to comment on the suit.
