We tend to take the great outdoors for granted in South Florida. Maybe it’s that old adage, “You don’t know what you’ve got till it’s gone.” Our winter-dwelling neighbors to the north are quick to slap on a pair of shorts and pack the tent into the minivan as soon as the temperature warms up to 60 degrees. We locals tend to do our camping indoors, huddled by the light of the TV set and the cooling wheeze of the air conditioner. No more. If your resolution is to learn to enjoy the pleasures of nature, sign up for this Saturday’s program at the Castellow Hammock Nature Center (22301 SW 162nd Ave., Miami). Ecoadventures: Basic Outdoor Skills will get you up to speed while the weather is still enjoyable.
The session costs $12 per person, and attendees will learn the basics: equipment, knots, camping cuisine, and the best places to pitch a tent from Fort Lauderdale to the Florida Keys. Soon enough, you’ll be setting up a camping stove and using the bathroom on remote nature trails with the best of ’em! Pre-registration is required, so call 305-242-7688 to sign up and find out about the new Expedition South Florida Camping Program.
