Years before Mark Handforth rocketed to international fame, in 1996 he was the first local artist to have a solo show at the Museum of Contemporary Art. As MOCA celebrates its 15th anniversary, the artist returns to the museum with a vengeance. And this time MOCA isn’t big enough to contain all of the Miami-based Brit’s work.
“Mark Handforth: Rolling Stop,” organized by Bonnie Clearwater, the museum’s executive director and chief curator, features more than 25 of his skull-staving works, some of which will extend beyond MOCA’s confines.
Handforth’s massive installation Electric Tree, a giant banyan located in North Miami’s Griffing Park, is illuminated with scores of fluorescent light tubes. And in Wynwood, his pink neon Weeping Moon will draw eyes heavenward as its waning crescent profile appears to shed tears while glowing from atop a billboard. Discover how Handforth conjures magic through his poetic sculptures inspired by everyday objects and elements found in public spaces. The exhibit will be up through February 19.
