A few miles north of Miami, on the swampy edges of Lake Okeechobee, there are a couple of impoverished little towns called Pahokee and Belle Glade where they churn out gasp-inducing football talent like a cash crop. Without much else to do, the kids chase and skin rabbits and play pigskin in the nation’s best high school rivalry, the beautifully named Muck Bowl.
There were so many South Florida connections in yesterday’s Super Bowl — from big-time UM alums Edgerrin James and Antrel Rolle to Pahokee High grad Anquan Boldin — that it’s not shocking that a local boy made good on the biggest stage around.
The big surprise is that it wasn’t the superstar Boldin on the high-flying Cardinals offense that pulled off the game of his life.
It was Santonio Holmes — who lit it up at Boldin’s Muck Bowl rival, Glades Central, for four years — who snagged MVP honors for grabbing nine catches for 131 yards and an outrageous game-winning touchdown. Holmes has had some issues this year — he missed a game in October after cops caught him driving around Pittsburgh with pot in his car — so chances are he’s enjoying Sunday’s results.
