Summer is here, which means it’s time to fall asleep in the sun and get a book-shaped tan line in the center of your chest. But how do you know which book to choose when so many of them are the same shape?
Well, you could always dust off Choose Your Own Adventure from last summer. But do you really trust yourself to choose your own adventure? After all, you’re the person who tried to use your sink’s garbage disposal to make smoothies by tying strings around the stems of the fruit and vegetables.
Turn the choices in your literary adventures over to someone who knows what he’s doing. This Tuesday at 8 p.m., you’ll want to pay a visit to Colum McCann at Books & Books (265 Aragon Ave., Coral Gables). McCann, the Irishman who won the National Book Award for his novel Let the Great World Spin, will read from his latest, Transatlantic.
Hey, how many continents and centuries was your adventure going to span? If your answer was, “Derrrr, one of each?” that’s proof right there that McCann is more qualified than you. His adventure has Frederick Douglass bouncing around 19th-century Dublin, Sen. George Mitchell making babies in New York just a couple of decades ago, and pilots attempting the first nonstop flight across the Atlantic right after World War I. Suck on that; part of his adventure doesn’t even take place on a continent.
