The miracle of life meet the nightmare of Miami traffic yesterday afternoon when a woman stuck in rush hour congestion gave birth on the shoulder of an exit ramp to the Dolphin Expressway.
According to The Herald, Venezuelan visitor Ana Delia Bracho was being rushed to a hospital by family members in a black Cadillac at around 5 p.m., just in time for rush hour traffic. But the child would not wait, and the driver pulled over to the NW 57th Ave exit ramp.
The driver called 911, and an FHP trooper and Miami-Dade firefighter crew rushed to the scene to help in the delivery, but by the time they arrived the child was well on its way.
Bracho wasn’t due for another month, but the five-pound, one-ounce baby couldn’t wait to come out and was born right there in the backset of the Cadillac. A relative cut the umbilical cord. Both mother and child were then taken to South Miami Hospital to recover.
“Mother and family members are very grateful to all those who assisted,” FHP spokesman Joe Sanchez said in a statement. “It’s not every day we get to assist in delivering a baby on the Dolphin Expressway.”
