Next time your art school nemesis gives you grief for staying put in your hometown while he racks up student loans at Pratt, force him to do a Google search on Miami-based artist Jillian Mayer. In her short career, the Florida International University grad has given birth to herself on film, made a flick about the life of 2 Live Crew rapper Luther Campbell that was showcased at the Guggenheim Museum, and become a YouTube sensation for her hilarious tribute to her future spawn with “I Am Your Grandma.” Suck on that, Sallie Mae! Mayer’s work stands in stark contrast to the adage that you have to leave home to truly make it, which makes her a natural pick for the exhibition of winners for the 23rd annual South Florida Cultural Consortium Visual and Media Arts Fellowship Awards at the Art and Culture Center of Hollywood. Saturday’s free opening reception feature works by South Florida artists including Mayer, Asser Saint-Val, and Victoria Gitman.
Sat., Sept. 10, 6 p.m.; Tuesdays-Sundays, 10 a.m. Starts: Sept. 10. Continues through Oct. 2, 2011
