It seemed for a while that the worst for the Miami Herald may be over, but the paper just announced that they’re cutting 49 jobs across the Miami Herald Media Company. Nine of those positions will come from the Herald’s newsroom, with another six coming from El Nuevo Herald’s newsroom.

The Herald announced the cuts in a story on their own site.

“These actions come in response to the volatility of the economic recovery, a situation that is affecting many industries,” the article quotes publisher David Landsberg as saying in an email to the staff.

Seven full-time positions will be eliminated in the newsrooms along with two part-time positions. Over at El Nuevo, four newsroom jobs will be cut along with another two part-time positions.

The Herald cut hundreds of jobs in 2008 and 2009. Though the company announced force furloughs for employees this year it hasn’t announced a round of layoffs since late last year.

We’ll let you know if we hear more.
Update: Editor & Publisher has details on which newsroom jobs are being sacked: “The positions include an assignment editor, a copy editor, a designer, a position in the library, a photographer, an online editor, and two positions in the wireroom.” Remaining employees will also face a second furlough beginning in the fourth quarter of this year.
