Would you like to be carrying 2.5 ounces of marijuana right now? How about tending your own marijuana garden at home with up to six plants? Or would you rather buy marijuana from a store and have the tax proceeds go to the state? Well, call your state senator and tell them you support SB 1562!
The bill, which would legalize marijuana for recreational purposes, has absolutely no chance of passing, but it’s the thought that counts.
With the specter of Floridians legalizing medical marijuana by ballot initiative in November hangs over the Florida Legislature, Dwight Bullard, a Democrat who represents the Keys and parts of Miami-Dade, went a step further and filed a bill that would straight up legalize recreational marijuana in Florida.
The bill would allow those 21 and over to have 2.5 ounces of marijuana for personal use, and grow up to six marijuana plants. The bill would also set up a system for the sale and taxation of marijuana.

The bill specifies that some of the tax money would then go to studies of marijuana’s beneficial effects.
The bill would also rename the Division of Alcoholic Beverages and Tobacco as the Division of Alcoholic Beverages, Marijuana, and Tobacco.
The bill will likely die a swift death in Florida’s Republican controlled Senate, but at least someone has gone ahead and written out the legislation.
