Ikea, Volvo, and electro-pop music — that’s what we at New Times think about when someone says, “Sweden.” And speaking of the European Union’s third-largest country by area, Swedish indie outfit Little Dragon is almost here!

Earlier this year, the Gothenburg-based group released its third studio album, Ritual Union. At the time, we spoke with lead singer Yukimi Nagano about her band, and she described Little Dragon’s music as a “free-range, organic, synth-R&B fruit cocktail.” Cute, no?

Brooklyn Vegan picked up on the interview, posting bits and pieces on its culturally relevant music blog and extracting the part about Little Dragon’s strict no-guitar rule: “None of us plays guitar very well, so that’s one reason. I guess we just feel like there are so many guitar bands out there. And we haven’t felt inspired to have any guitars on any songs.”

Naturally, Ritual Union is 43 minutes of soulful synthpop sans a six-string. But even without guitars, Little Dragon makes inspiring records that are as catchy as crabs. And we mean that in a good way.

Will you step up to support New Times this year?

At New Times, we’re small and scrappy — and we make the most of every dollar from our supporters. Right now, we’re $16,750 away from reaching our December 31 goal of $30,000. If you’ve ever learned something new, stayed informed, or felt more connected because of New Times, now’s the time to give back.
