It is one of the great tragedies of moviedom that Stanley Kubrick‘s brilliant career ended with Eyes Wide Shut, a terribly awful film by anyone’s hand, but especially lousy compared to any of the great American auteur’s other works. To make a comparison, spend the weekend with host Shelley Novak for the screenings of Full Metal Jacket and the unintentionally hilarious but ultimately sad Eyes, shown here in its unreleased NC-17 version. Jacket provides a Vietnam-movie tutorial Oliver Stone would’ve done well to have studied, and the 1985 film is well worth a second (or third) viewing. Tonight at 8:30, Gary Landon Mills, who played Donlan, will offer a slide show and firsthand accounts of what it was like to work with Stan the Man; Eyes shows Saturday at the same time.
