Jackson’s has been serving soul food in Overtown, at one location or another, since 1946. Its current incarnation is as a large, bright, 100-plus seat breakfast joint on a redeveloped stretch of NW Third Ave. (open from 6 a.m. until 1 p.m.).

The menu includes pancakes, waffles, and the like, as well as eggs served with grits or home fries, meat of choice, and two homemade biscuits that look a bit dry from the outside, but are actually very moist inside. Meat on the plate can be bacon or sausage, but can also be chicken wings, liver & onions, or fried catfish — the last one of the house specialties.

The breakfast shown in photo, with pot of coffee plunked on the table, with tax, came to $7.41.

I’ll be heading back to check out some of the less conventional breakfasts, including the weekend-only “boil fish & grits”.
