Emily Eisenhauer taught English to college students in rural China. Patty Phares was a junior high math instructor in the Samoan countryside. Both are members of the Returned Peace Corps Volunteers of South Florida, but you’ll catch only one of them drinking Friday night at Shuckers. Eisenhauer says, “I think it’s more for the younger folks.” But Phares, president of the group, assures us “everyone is welcome.” The group has more than 200 members from South Miami-Dade to Broward, and once a month or so, they meet up to hang out, drink, and “advance the cause of volunteerism for the betterment of the world and the community.”
Potential recruits, get the inside scoop from those who’ve been there and done that. Veterans, reminisce on your glory days and trade war stories. Fresh from the field? Bask in the glow of your own positivity and the fresh, cool hum of the air conditioner. This is a call to action. Get to Shuckers at 6.
