If you have a pulse, it’s hard not to appreciate comedian Kyle Grooms. Before stints on Chappelle’s Show, Last Comic Standing, and P. Diddy’s Bad Boys of Comedy, he honed his clever, observational sense of humor in the Magic City. He was the art director at Univision (how’s that for a WTF factoid?). And as if being the only African-American, non-Spanish-speaking employee at a telenovela factory didn’t provide enough comedic material, Grooms also sprinkled his act with bits about being mistaken as smart because of his glasses (“You look like you went to college. No, I went to Pearl Vision.”) and white people’s response to his black family skiing (“Are those bears?”). There are also his spot-on, stuttering impression of Barack Obama and his slick way of making controversial jokes seem as light and fluffy as a bear wearing glasses. Check out Grooms this weekend when he performs Saturday at 8:30 and 10:30 p.m. and Sunday at 8:30 p.m. at the Miami Improv.
