Murder. Hallucinations. A blood-soaked and betrayed bride. Sounds like a scene straight out of a horror flick, but Lucia di Lammermoor is actually one of the most famous Italian operas of all time. Sure to be the source of many a groom-to-be’s worst nightmares, Lucia kills her new husband in the bridal chamber, horrifying the guests. Allegedly, Lucia di Lammermoor is based on a true story, recounted by Sir Walter Scott, of a woman driven to insanity after being forced to marry a man she did not love.
What with star-crossed lovers crooning and fainting and committing suicide with a dagger, the whole plot makes Romeo & Juliet look like child’s play. This Saturday’s Florida Grand Opera presentation of Lucia di Lammermoor stars Eglise Gutiérrez as the muy loca Lucia. Go get slayed.
