It took six mixtapes, a fake Cuban accent, and a sizzurp high before Future landed a record deal with Epic. Now the Atlanta-based rapper is one of the Dirty South’s most promising artists. “I’m just coming out, but if you go anywhere in the South,” he says, “I get that love and respect like I have a catalogue of LPs under my belt.”
But Future has only one LP, Pluto, which was released earlier this year and features collaborations with everyone from R. Kelly to Drake to Snoop Dogg. This Auto-Tuned 26-year-old spitter’s rise to Southern-rap supremacy and R&B stardom is mind-blowing. In March, Future appeared at XXL‘s South by Southwest show. And a few months earlier, the hip-hop magazine’s annual “Freshman Class” issue profiled him alongside Danny Brown, French Montana, and other up-and-coming artists. Then came even bigger breaks.
“When I was making ‘Tony Montana,’ it was so farfetched for me to get Drake on the record,” the rapper says. “They called me and said, ‘Drake wants to get on Tony.’ We had a long conversation. I sent it to him, and he sent it back the same night.” As a result, homie is riding the fame wave and touring the country in support of Pluto, which debuted in the Top 10 on the Billboard 200 and sold more than 40,000 copies its first week.
“I make music on the highest level,” Future boasts. “When you listen to Pluto, you’ll understand.”
