Free Events This Week in Miami: David Bowie, Fashionable Films, and Critical Mass

January has been kind of a bastard. From contentious presidential debates to shocking celebrity deaths, this month has given us a sad start to 2016. Thankfully, Miamians will get the chance to close out the month with a week of therapeutic activities. Enjoy diverse films, catch unique panel discussions, and pay tribute to a rock god – all for free. 

Monday

• Girl Develop It Inspiration Panel at the Lab Miami: Join members of the international nonprofit organization Girl Develop It and hear about the rewards and challenges woman face in the technology industry. 
  
• UM’s Open Mic USpeak at Books & Books: The first USpeak Flash Fiction and Poetry Performance Open Mic Series of 2016 welcomes Miami-based writer, photographer, teacher, and former fashion designer Neil de la Flor. 

Tuesday

• Casual Conversations at the Wynwood Yard: The New Tropic’s latest moderated discussion welcomes VP of Arts at the Knight Foundation – Victoria Rogers – who will answer questions about leadership, her journey, and other topics.
  

Wednesday

• Fantastic Four at SoundScape: If you’re gonna watch a terribly received action flick, you might as well watch it for free. 
  
• Harvey and Myrna Frommer at Books & Books: The acclaimed oral historians present It Happened in Miami, the Magic City: An Oral History, which features nearly 70 voices including more than 15 mini-memorists recounting stories about Miami’s vibrant past and present. 
  
• Speaking Sustainably at the Deering Estate: The latest film in the ongoing environmental movie series is Billfish: Battle on the Line?, a look at the researchers studying sailfish and marlin in the region and their work to protect the fish populations from further decline.
