The sweat pours down your neck and puddles at the front of your T-shirt. Strike one, looking. You sip — okay, chug — the frosty beer and let your head tilt back, closing your eyes against the outfield lights, ghost circles expanding and exploding on the backs of your eyelids. Ball, high and away. In the distance a horn sounds and a family of fans shares high-fives. Ball two, outside again. A little kid’s eyes grow large. Cabrera swings and nails the fastball, cracking a whip down the third-base line, a stand-up double, and you remember why baseball can be so good — lots of reasons. With emerging stars such as Miguel Cabrera, Dan Uggla, and pitcher Dontrelle Willis, the Marlins are hoping to prove the nattering nabobs of negativity wrong by continuing their winning ways of late through the second half of the season. A three-game home stand against the division-leading New York Mets, including tonight’s 7:05 contest, is a fine place to begin establishing that a team can win without spending any money. Tickets range from $6 to $90. Call 1-877-MARLINS, or visit florida.marlins.mlb.com.
