It’s hard out there for a performance artist—or almost anywhere else, for that matter. Performance art is one of the most challenging and unusual forms of creative expression around, and as a result, it fits in almost nowhere. Luckily, the Miami Light Project provides recognition for these artists with its annual Here & Now performance, now in its 14th year. They’ve selected three performance artists and one artistic duo whose work taps into the current of today’s rushing thoughts and moods. Each artist receives a $4,000 commission award, rehearsal space, and production support leading up to the debut performance on Thursday. Luis Alberto Cuevas, an accomplished dancer and choreographer, will present a multimedia dance theater performance using live video cameras, spoken text, and performance art in a fast-paced, dynamic production. Peruvian Ivon Batanero’s multimedia dance contribution will paint a chaotic, suspenseful night terror on stage. Natasha Tsakos, whose performance credits include everything from acting to directing to clowning, will create an on-stage adventure through time using 3-D mapping technology. And Priscilla Marrero and Carlota Pradera will collaborate to produce a piece that explores the psychology behind Miami’s preoccupation with plastic surgery.
