The original show — part unintentional comedy, part drama — starred David Hasselhoff and Pamela Anderson as bomb-defusing, fearless California lifeguards.
After Johnson’s announcement, the project seemed to fall off the radar, issues of funding and casting seemed to stall the project. But now the Baywatch reboot is definitely on, and its cast continues to expand. The Hollywood Reporter notes that the script is a “by-the-book and very serious lifeguard (Johnson) who is forced to team up with a young rule-flouting hothead (Efron) in order to save their beach from environmental destruction at the hands of an oil tycoon.” That sounds deliciously bad.
