$10,000

If you’re among those who cited having a religious experience while witnessing Jennifer Hudson belt out “And I Tell You I’m Not Going” in the 2006 film Dreamgirls, hold on to your rosary. Another Effie, now played by Moya Angela, will shake, tremble, and sing her way through that heartbreak anthem in the touring musical of the same name. Although this time, Effie’s live, soulful vibrations will ripple through the audience at the Adrienne Arsht Center instead of being trapped behind the movie screen.
The musical, like the film, follows Motown girl group the Dreams as they struggle for fame, civil rights, and diva drama. The production launched at Harlem’s Apollo Theater and is touring the nation with the hope of eventually landing on Broadway. The prospect looks good considering reviews report standing ovations, Robert Longbottom’s artful direction and choreography, and a high-tech set where LED panels flicker an ever-changing backdrop of cities. Dreamgirls will premiere in Miami this Tuesday at 8 p.m. at the Ziff Ballet Opera House and will run through October 24. Tickets cost $25 to $76. Call 305-949-6722 or visit arshtcenter.org.

Tuesdays-Sundays, 8 p.m. Starts: Oct. 19. Continues through Oct. 24, 2010
