You don’t have to be Trey Parker or Matt Stone to write the next Book of Mormon, the South Park creators’ Broadway musical that recently swept the Tonys. All you need is a good idea, some engaging characters, and an understanding of the thespian business and craft. This weekend, you can learn all of those things and then some at CityWrights. This four-day conference for budding playwrights, sponsored by City Theatre, includes an assortment of workshops, panels, and performances by national playwrights.
Workshops include Overcoming Writer’s Block, Composing a 10-Minute Play, Agents and Publishers, Professional Development, and the Nuts and Bolts of Playwriting. Guest lecturers include Tony-nominated and Yale Drama School faculty member Lisa Kron, Obie Award-winning Israel Horowitz, and the director of business affairs for the Dramatist Guild of America, David Faux. Playwriting might be a fickle branch on the tree of writing, but it sure is fun to swing on. CityWrights opens with a welcome reception Thursday at the Epic Hotel.
