As with many significant musicians, classification is pointless when it comes to James Blood Ulmer. Yeah, blues, sure … but there’s that funk element. In any case, it certainly can be offered that Blood tears the shit out of the joint. With a rhythm section and musical reminders of Katrina, the legend’s current show will at least get your heart pumping. Blood’s appearance opens a promising season of Tigertail productions at 8:30 p.m. at the Colony Theater. Tickets cost $35 ($50 for primo seats), and can be had by calling 305-545-8546 or clicking www.tigertail.org. Cool, right?
Wait, what’s this? The jazz cats want to make scheduling a problem by offering — same date, same time — a heavy dose of hearty classics (Monk, Miles, and the like) from a team of familiar interpreters? Well, yeah. Arthur Barron, Saul Gross, Ken Kay, the Oscar Salas Trio, Bob Rosati, and Jonathan Gross kick it for the Miami Jazz Project at St. John’s United Methodist Church, 4760 Pine Tree Dr., Miami Beach. Tickets cost $20. Call 305-613-2325, and buy $15 discount tickets at www.artsatstjohns.com.

Will you step up to support New Times this year?
At New Times, we’re small and scrappy — and we make the most of every dollar from our supporters. Right now, we’re $18,000 away from reaching our December 31 goal of $30,000. If you’ve ever learned something new, stayed informed, or felt more connected because of New Times, now’s the time to give back.
