If it is Swan Lake you seek, stay away from Florida International University’s VH-100 Theater this weekend. But if it is a slice of the avant garde you crave, then the performance Falling Up, which promises to be far from your usual toe-twirling experience, may be just what the dance doctor ordered. The difficult-to-describe performance is choreographed by New York-based Heather Maloney, who will be joined onstage by South Florida dancer John Beauregard. Characters are described as “sometimes disturbing” and “sometimes humorous,” and we are assured the two will “inevitably converge and repel within the ephemeral set.” Although we don’t know exactly what that means, it does bring to mind certain images: Crash test dummies? Spiders collecting kill? Your new squeeze who is playing hard-to-get? None of the above might actually take place onstage, but either way it does not sound traditional. If this is not enough to stroke your dramatic genie, there will also be projections, slide shows, and a sound score.
