While you think of dancing as more of a solo sport, folks in India get together and get down with some bhangra. This fusion of music and dance combines singing and instruments with the traditional Punjabi dance, and judging from bhangra’s recent melding with hip-hop, reggae, house, and drum ’n’ bass, we’re pretty sure the rest of the world is feeling the beats of India. Jay-Z, Madonna, and Craig David have all gotten in on the act, and at today’s Miami Bhangra Competition at the Gusman Center, you’ll see teams from across the nation face off for bragging rights and a shot at a $2,000 prize.
“A lot of people are really getting into it,” says the executive chair of the competition, Sunny Singh. “It’s a very upbeat dance with 16 people dancing at the same time.” Recording artist Bikram Singh will be gracing the stage and inspiring you to gather 15 of your closest friends and join in this Asian Rhythm Nation.
