The dressing room for the Broadway tour of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert is probably bigger than many of our own regional theater spaces, to say nothing of the prop room. This is a show that houses some 500 Tony Award-winning costumes — sequined, feathered frocks of all shapes, sizes, materials, and shimmer — plus the neon tour bus, with its giant glittery stiletto atop it, hulking behind the performers. Some of the dresses, like the bulky cupcake bottoms, are reportedly some of Broadway’s biggest ever, and in previous productions they had to be stored in the rafters and lowered onto the actors when the time came. Such are the risks and rewards of this ambitious, expensive frivolity based on the 1994 cult film The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert. If previous reviews are any indication, the musical’s plot — about two drag queens and a transvestite woman on a road trip toward friendship, love, and enlightenment — is definitely secondary to the spectacle. The jukebox of pop hits composing the soundtrack (think Madonna, Cyndi Lauper, and Donna Summer) has helped make this visually extravagant comedy an infectious, sing-along crowd pleaser.
