When the Miami Heat traded for Daequan Cook in 2007, he was supposed to become the Toni Kukoc to Dwyane Wade’s Michael Jordan. Cook was expected to take full advantage of D-Wade’s ability to draw double-teams by draining wide-open threes. But the self-proclaimed “Bail Bondsman” — he calls himself this because he bails teams out with big shots down the stretch — has proven to be more Kwame Brown than Kukoc.
Cook is shooting well under 30 percent from the three-point line this year. This time last season, however, he was playing his best basketball. Then he won the NBA three-point shooting contest during All-Star Weekend and subsequently lost his shot, never to regain it for the rest of the season. Now Cook has been invited back to the contest this year. Yeah, that ought to fix his 4.3 points per game average good and proper in time for the matchup with the Minnesota Timberwolves this Tuesday.
