Beloved neighborhood Italian eatery Casa Toscana has just announced that it will shut its doors immediately. Owner Sandra Stefani sent out an e-mail thanking her customers for their patronage and friendship over the last six years. Blame it on the economy, or Miami’s obsession with the newest, latest on the food scene.
In a town that is plagued with frequent restaurant openings and closings, I am particularly saddened to see Casa Toscana close. As the chef/proprietor, Sandra brought traditional Tuscan dishes to the burgeoning Upper East Side community at reasonable prices. She cooked with soul and sass.
I also participated in many of Sandra’s very hands-on cooking classes, where I learned to make pasta from scratch. Fortunately, she says that she will continue to teach these classes at an undisclosed location.
Whether you only tried Casa Toscana once or you were one of Sandra’s regulars, Miami should note the loss of this local culinary gem.
