Being a Hurricanes fan is a bit tough at the moment, but there’s always baseball. Oh, there will always be the baseball team.
One of the greatest programs in college baseball are perennial contenders, but things haven’t worked out that well this year.
A 36-20 record is nothing to sneeze at, but it’s a far cry from last years showing when the Canes won their first ever conference championship and went into the NCAA tournament ranked number one. But for a team that graduated a good portion of its fire power, they’ve done alright through out the regular season. Same couldn’t be said for the ACC tournament.
On Wednesday they took care of Georgia Tech (who came into the Tournament as favorites) with a stupendous six run sixth inning. Yesterday they faltered to rivals FSU 4-2, and today they got routed by the so-so Boston College, 10-1.
Jim Morris said the team needed a two wins in the tourney to keep their hopes of hosting a regional in the NCAA alive, but the chances of that happening are reduced to a hope and a prayer.
With the loss, the Canes may be headed to Gainesville for the first round — which is just insult to injury. Though, who knows what could happen. Fresno State came into the tournament last year as a regional fourth seed and won the College World Series. Then again, with this subpar showing in the ACC, will they be able to get their momentum back on track for the big dance?
