In a surprising change from its usual highfalutin programming, this Broward Center-affiliated venue on the Nova campus gives itself over Friday night to local hip-hop. The star of the event is 954 rapper Breyan Isaac, who celebrates the release of his album Extraordinarily Average. Luckily, the disc is more than its name implies. Songs such as “Ballin” are the usual commercial hip-hop/pop fare full of Auto-Tuned hooks, but beyond the obvious singles, Isaac’s material gets interesting. “Shake It Off,” for instance, is built on old-school R&B swing with lots of brass and a driving chorus that sounds almost ready for a musical. That and the more orthodox but up-tempo dance numbers should carry him through a show in a staid theater full of bolted-down seats.
