Longtime legends of the lower-lower Manhattan underground, the quartet A.R.E. Weapons have been steadily chugging along since 1999, blasting out something along the lines of electro-rock as imagined by former punk rock types. The band’s noisy assault of party-in-your-face found some near-mainstream success in the U.K., where it scored a few singles in the low reaches of the national top-100 charts in the earlier part of this decade. Still, they’ve soldiered on, although it’s been about a year since the band’s fourth and latest album, Modern Mayhem, was birthed in September 2007. Gratuitous name-drop/Google-hit-raiser: the band’s synth player is Paul Sevigny, brother-of-Chloe and owner of New York hotspot the Beatrice Inn. A.R.E. Weapons plays O.H.W.O.W.’s Art Basel opening jam on Tuesday, December 2; J.D. Samson of Le Tigre also DJs, and plenty of free booze will be flowing.
