Like your drunk uncle slurring “Jingle Bells” and your nieces and nephews whining over whose turn it is to mess around with the new Wii games, Ebenezer Scrooge’s iconic humbugging is an irreplaceable sound bite from many Americans’ Christmases. But what would Scrooge’s tale of rebirth be without the ominous haunting from his deceased, morally wayward business partner, Jacob Marley? A one-man show coming Saturday to Actors’ Playhouse at the Miracle Theatre (280 Miracle Mile, Coral Gables) explores this intriguing, terrifying character. Chained, shackled, and condemned to a hellish eternity, Marley desperately seeks to free himself from his own chains — a feat he can accomplish only by saving Scrooge’s at-risk soul. Adding to the motif of tradition in this spin on the classic Dickens tale, Jacob Marley’s Christmas Carol will be performed by Ken Clement, a South Florida actor who first took on the demanding role ten years ago in the New Theatre’s production of the same play. Clement will convey more than a dozen characters in a production that promises to induce laughter, tears, and exponential growth of your good will toward men.
Wednesdays-Sundays, 2 & 8 p.m. Starts: Dec. 10. Continues through Jan. 1, 2011
