“They always say a picture paints a thousand words,” says David Palmer, co-program director with Yanis Pikieris of Miami City Ballet’s Contemporary Dance Series. “Well, choreography is many pictures; it’s movement.” And this statement reflects tonight’s series opener, an intimate look at Twyla Tharp, a master contemporary choreographer. The program features “The Golden Section,” from The Catherine Wheel, and a sneak peek at sections of Tharp’s In the Upper Room, scheduled to premiere during the repertory season.
Also planned is the unique “Dance Talk” with Edward Villella, founding artistic director/CEO. The talk offers an in-depth look at the neoclassical style of George Balanchine’s Agon, a piece said to have changed the world of ballet because it introduced and inspired a move to abstract. Villella will dissect ballet to show what lies behind that abstraction. Performances are at 8:00 tonight and Saturday (with a matinee at 2:00 p.m. Saturday) at the Miami City Ballet Studios, 2200 Liberty Ave., Miami Beach. Tickets cost $45.
