Groovy's Pizza & Grill, the greasy yet weirdly beloved dive on 27th Avenue, has officially been evicted — and depending on who you ask, it's either the end of an era or long overdue.
Located between Coral Way and U.S. 1 on 27th Avenue, Groovy's wasn't known for gourmet fare or pristine conditions. In fact, it was kind of the opposite. The pizza was notoriously oily, the kitchen questionably clean, and the floor always suspiciously sticky. But it also served a crucial purpose in Miami's late-night food ecosystem: it was always open, always cheap, and always there for the students, night owls, and stumblers leaving Coconut Grove at 2 a.m. with nowhere else to go. Now, a large sign slapped on the front window reads like a final nail in the coffin: "You are commanded to remove all persons from the following described property in Miami-Dade County, Florida." The building's ownership appears to have lost patience — whether it was due to unpaid rent, poor conditions, or neighborhood pressure is still unclear. Now, the building is officially in the ownership of its landlord, "2 Indian Creek Holdings, LLC."
Despite the harsh notice, Groovy’s had its defenders.
University of Miami students, residents of the newly opened Grove Central Residences condominium across the street, and those who live near Coral Way and 27th all had their own version of "that one time at Groovy's." There was something oddly comforting about knowing you could wander in for a $5 slice at 1 a.m. and hear reggaeton blaring from the jukebox while someone argued with a delivery driver in the parking lot. But even the most nostalgic locals will admit the place had...issues.
In the ever-glossier landscape of Miami dining, Groovy’s was a holdout from another time — one where vibes mattered more than health inspections. Now, with its faded red awning and chaotic charm gone for good, the late-night crowd will have to find their next questionable food fix elsewhere.
Good News: Panera, Chipotle, and the soon-to-open Black Coffee are giving the area some life across the street at Grove Central. All the community needs now is an actually great pizza spot (that doesn't require crossing U.S. 1), or a bar. Oooh.. or both.
Goodbye, Groovy's. Thanks for the memories — and the heartburn.
