Three people died, and a motorist was injured Friday morning after a small airplane crashed near the intersection of Military Trail and Glades Road, police say.
The nearby roadways were closed into Friday afternoon as first responders worked the warlike scene.
The Cessna 310 aircraft departed Boca Raton Airport en route to Tallahassee at 10 a.m. At about 10:12 a.m., the pilot reported mechanical issues. Minutes later, at 10:20 a.m., the plane crashed, killing everyone on board, according to reports.
Video captured by witnesses shows plane debris smoking and scattered across the roads and train tracks.
The motorist who was injured in the collision, Pablo Tafur, was on his way to work, according to NBC 6 South Florida, when the plane exploded directly in front of his car. "Got out of the car that was on fire, through the flames, and made it to safety," he told the news outlet.
Police say the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) are investigating the crash.
A Palm Beach County Medical Examiner's Office representative didn't have any information about the identities of the victims when reached by phone Friday.
"We are deeply saddened to confirm that a plane crash occurred earlier today within our community," Boca Raton Mayor Scott Singer said in a statement. "Our thoughts are with all those affected by this tragic event. We ask for patience and respect for the families involved as investigations continue."
Several roads near the crash remained closed into Friday afternoon.
