Boone Pickens, no relation to Slim, is a Texas oil man who pissed off many a liberal by helping to finance the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth smear campaign during the 2004 election, but has since emerged as a champion for alternative energy. He has spent $50 million and the past few years publicizing a plan to wean America off foreign oil and onto natural gas and wind power. Yesterday he found yet another eager supporter in Miami Mayor Manny Diaz. He endorsed the plan in Washington, D.C. during the winter meeting of the U.S. Conference of Mayors, of which he is president. While some theorize that Pickens would benefit financially if the plan were set into motion, President Obama has said he agrees with much of the plan.
