The Florida Press Club has announced the winners of its 1992 Excellence in Journalism competition. New Times received five awards in the statewide weekly newspaper division.
Staff writer Greg Baker won first place in the feature-writing category for his stories “For Goodness, Snakes,” “The Rap Trap,” and “Shrimp City.”
Staff writer Steven Almond was awarded second place in the features category for “The Case From Hell,” “Junk!” and “King Con.”
Completing a sweep of the feature-writing category, staff writer Jim DeFede won third place for his articles “Willy & Sal,” “Justice Undone,” and “Inside Edition.”

In addition New Times received a first place award for general excellence and execution of a special section (“Best of Miami,” March 1992), and editor Jim Mullin a third place award for commentary. The awards will be presented this Saturday in St. Petersburg.
