A Porsche SUV struck a pedestrian crossing Biscayne Boulevard near 14th Street just outside the Adrienne Arsht Center around 7:30 this morning. The driver, meanwhile, is in custody as police try to determine what happened.

Traffic around downtown Miami is backed up as a result of the accident. Police have shut down the area while they continue their investigation.

According to WSVN, the impact was severe. Witnesses told police that the victim was sent flying into the air. An umbrella and backpack were left on the street. The victim was rushed to Jackson Memorial Hospital and is listed in critical condition.

The driver, meanwhile, pulled over and stayed on the scene.

"We have the vehicle, the Porsche, that was responsible for the crash on scene," Miami Police Sgt. Freddie Cruz told WSVN. "We're still trying to determine if the person crossing from west to east was walking in the crosswalk or jaywalking."
