Vincent Paul Collins, 25, and Savanah Lynn Sholter, 21, have been arrested after authorities found their two-year-old son abandoned in a Hialeah motel room surrounded by his own filth and a dead animal, and weighing only 15 pounds. The pair is charged with one count each of child neglect and are in jail on $7,500 bond.
Police found the boy on Saturday unresponsive and not breathing at the Rainbow Inn Motel on West Okeechobee Rd. The two-year-old only weighed 15 pounds, which was about half of what he should weigh.
According to CBS Miami his skin was matted in feces, his back covered in lesions, and his toe nails seemed as if they had never been cut. A dead animal and other filth was also found in the room.
The child had a pre-existing medical condition, but it wasn't related to his state. He was taken to Miami Children's Hospital in serious condition.
Collins and Sholter had rented out a second room in the motel and were living in it with a second, healthy child. The neglected child was seemingly abandoned, and they told house keepers not to enter the room.
The second child has been taken into protective custody.
